We wanted to create some clarity— pun intended, around paint correction services and what you should expect when getting one of these services from our team.

Paint correction refers to the result , not the number of polishing steps. The number of steps determines how much defect removal is possible.

Every correction service starts with a complete exterior wash or isolated wash of the area(s) to be corrected.

1-Step Polish

A 1-Step Polish is designed to significantly improve the appearance of your paint by removing light swirl marks, light oxidation, haze, and minor imperfections while dramatically increasing gloss and depth.

This service is ideal for newer vehicles or paint that is already in relatively good condition. It delivers a beautiful finish without the additional time required for more extensive correction.

2-Step Paint Correction

A 2-Step Paint Correction is a more intensive restoration process designed to remove deeper scratches, heavier swirl marks, water spot etching, oxidation, and other paint defects.

The first step levels the imperfections using a cutting compound. The second step refines the finish to restore maximum clarity, gloss, and depth.

This service is recommended for vehicles with moderate to heavy paint defects or for owners seeking the highest possible finish before applying paint protection film or ceramic coating.

Setting Expectations

No paint correction can guarantee 100% defect removal. Some scratches are too deep because they extend through the clear coat. A professional detailer preserves clear coat thickness by improving those defects rather than removing excessive paint. A good rule of thumb we use during the pre-inspection process, is if the scratch catches your finger nail when lightly dragging across it, it's likely too deep to be removed with polishing.

Today I'll breakdown everything I've learned about ceramic coatings. What they do, what they don't do, and whether they're the right investment for you and your vehicle care goals.

What Is a Ceramic Coating?

A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that is professionally applied to your vehicle's painted surfaces. Once cured, it forms a durable, transparent protective layer that bonds to the paint.

Unlike waxes and sealants that sit on top of the paint and wear away relatively quickly, ceramic coatings create a much stronger bond and provide significantly longer-lasting protection.

What Does a Ceramic Coating Do?

A professionally installed ceramic coating offers several benefits:

What Ceramic Coatings WILL NOT Do

It's important to clarify what a ceramic coating will not do, so clients aren't left with information that's either untrue or expectations that are outside the scope of the product. Sometimes clients can be misled by marketing claims or worse, an installer trying to push a product. Ceramic coating are not some magic, impenetrable, forever-force field; although that would be cool.

WILL NOT Prevent Rock Chips ��
If a rock strikes your vehicle while you're driving, a ceramic coating will not stop the impact from damaging the paint. Paint Protection Film (PPF) is what you'd want for that.
WILL NOT Make Your Vehicle Scratch-Proof ��
While a ceramic coating can help reduce very minor wash marring; it will not , however, prevent scratching from keys, shopping carts, automatic car washes, or improper washing techniques.
WILL NOT Eliminate Maintenance ��
A ceramic coating is not a one-and-done permanent solution. A coated vehicle will still need to be washed and cared for properly. The coating will make the washing process a whole lot easier and quicker, but not completely unnecessary.
WILL NOT Make Your Vehicle Immune to Etching ��
You read that right—if you leave hard water or bug splatters on your coated vehicle long enough, mother nature will eventually win out and etch the coating; especially if left in the heat of the sun. A coating will still significantly slow the etching process, giving you more time to clean and remove threats.

* The "Lifetime" warranty of the Gold package from Ceramic Pro is dependent on never missing an annual ceramic maintenance detail. If an annual maintenance is missed, the warranty period moves to a 7-year warranty.

Recommended Aftercare

Your vehicle is now protected with a ceramic coating—now what? Proper maintenance and aftercare procedures will maximize the lifespan and performance of your coating. Let's take a look at what we recommend to get the most out of your new coating.

Cure Times

Cure times vary by product, but here are some rules of thumb for all coatings:

Keep the vehicle indoors if possible for the first 12–24 hours.
Avoid rain or standing water during the first 24 hours.
Do not wash the vehicle for 7 days.
Avoid automatic car washes and harsh chemicals during the first week.
If the vehicle gets wet, gently blot it dry with a clean microfiber towel rather than letting water sit on the surface.
After 7 days, wash using a pH-neutral automotive shampoo.

Wash Regularly

Wash your vehicle every 2-4 weeks using proper techniques and high-quality automotive shampoos. We use and recommend Griot's Garage products.

Avoid Automatic Brush Washes

Brush-style car washes can introduce scratches and swirl marks, even on coated vehicles. Touchless washes are generally safer, though hand washing is always preferred.

Remove Contaminants Promptly

Bird droppings, bug remains, tree sap, and other contaminants should be removed as soon as possible.

What those figures actually mean.

TSER (Total Solar Energy Rejection) → overall heat rejection
Measures how effectively a film blocks heat from the sun. Higher values indicate greater heat reduction and improved interior comfort.
IR Rejection → heat from infrared light radiation (what you feel)
This is often what you'll hear us talk about when explaining the different heat rejection performance numbers between films and how they feel.
UV Rejection → skin protection from ultraviolet light radiation
All of XPEL's films effectively block 99% of harmful UV rays from the sun that can lead to numerous skin cancers, premature aging, and skin cell damage. Additionally, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends these window tint films as an effective UV protectant. PRIME CS has a SPF rating of 500, while PRIME XR and XR PLUS have a SPF rating of 1000.
VLT (Visible Light Transmission) → how dark the tint is
Often expressed as "shade" or "darkness" levels, VLT refers to the percentage of visible light that passes through the window film. A lower VLT percentage means less light enters the vehicle, resulting in a darker tint. From Dark to Light, We stock 5%, 20%, 35%, 55%, and 70% in all three films.

SOME XR PLUS tint shades may have a slight blue hue to them. While not noticed by everyone, it is normal and simply a byproduct of it's ability to reject the most IR light. If the slight blue hue is a potential problem for you, we recommend choosing XR Black instead. Clients unsure about it at first, later report getting used to it over time and enjoying the high heat rejection performance.
